My Students

I am a recent graduate and new speech therapist working with preschoolers. One of the sites I serve includes 12 students in a self-contained classroom (SCC) with children who have autism and speech/language disorders. As a new therapist, I am seeking support for necessary materials to serve these energetic and bright students.

My kiddos love to learn, laugh, and sing as they build their communication and social skills with their peers and teachers!

They come from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, which allows us to appreciate the diversity within our district; but also limits us from obtaining resources for funding. Their daily structured schedule includes a morning circle time, table rotations across 3 different stations, speech and occupational therapy activities, snack/lunch, story time, and even an arts/music group. Many of them benefit from visual supports, modified books/curriculum, and motivating toys/games.

With the collaboration from the parents, teachers, aides, and therapists, (as well as your support), these children are ready to show us their potential to reach their milestones in both cognitive and linguistic domains.

My Project

Many children that require early intervention services in self-contained classrooms lack the social and communication skills to initiate and respond to Wh-questions such as "What do you want?", "What do you see", "Who is that?", "Where is the...?", etc.

The list of toys and books I am requesting all target these wh-questions so my kiddos can learn from their environment and engage in meaningful conversations with others.

The What's Inside? Touchy Feely Box is a wonderful tool to get the students' creative juices rolling in asking and answering "What" questions. It also stimulates their pretend play through the use of the small stuffed animals and allows me to also target their ability to follow simple commands like "Make the frog jump!" or "Make the butterfly fly!".

The "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Brown Bear" books also target wh-questions such as, "What is the caterpillar eating?" and "What do you see?", respectively. Furthermore, the sets of animal figures can support these books during play time as I reinforce the language used in the books. Their small stature makes them useful toys for playing hide-and-seek and prompting children, "Where" questions.

Finally, the toy ramp and play doh both provide opportunities for my kiddos to initiate communication by encouraging them to request for their wants/needs and responding very general questions like, "What do you want?". The toy ramp is also a great manipulative for targeting turn-taking with their peers and answering, "Who wants a turn?"

Who knew that these common toys and books could be such powerful tools in generating a stronger foundation in communication skills for my kiddos?! As a new speech therapist with limited resources for funding, I would highly appreciate your support so these preschoolers can reach their full potential when communicating with their friends and families.
