Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 3rd graders are mostly bilingual learners who love listening to stories and reading. They try very hard to read at grade level but are struggling to read and comprehend at the same time. Throughout our reading units, they become very excited to learn more about the topics we're studying.

During our biography unit, my students wanted to read beyond what I was reading to them and the biographies I have in class.

When I found other biographies for them, they became frustrated because the level of the books were too difficult for them to understand. My 3rd graders are still learning to be fluent readers. This is a critical time for them to build their reading confidence and bring them up to a higher reading level that will support them in the higher, more advanced grades.

My Project

The leveled biography books that I'm requesting will help my students build their reading fluency and comprehension. The people they'll be reading about have an important part in our history. They have also faced challenges and struggles that many of my students can relate to. My students will read these books during and after our biography unit in the classroom during reading time and take them home to share with their families.

Reading is so important for the success of my students!

While they still love books right now, it's important for them to have successful reading experiences to build their reading fluency and comprehension. Without a selection of books for them to read at their different reading levels, they struggle to stay motivated to read. These leveled biographies will give them choice and help them continue to improve their reading skills.
