Who Was... the Third Grader with a Great Library?

My students need fiction and nonfiction books to supplement our new reading curriculum and to teach our new standards, since our school does not have the necessary funding to buy more materials.

My Students

I work for a Title I school in a small inner city area. My students are 33% African American, 33% English Language Learners, and 34% white, Asian, and other diverse populations.

We are a relatively small school system, and many students come to class needing assistance with supplies and at times behind in their learning.

These students are strong, capable learners who need to be able to be competitive with their peers for 21st century jobs in the future. Sometimes my students have been overlooked or don't try due to a fear of failure in not having what other students have access to. They give up easier on themselves because they don't feel they are as good as their same aged peers due to a lack of experiences and opportunities in the technological world.

My Project

I am requesting new books and classroom library materials to offset the changes in our school curriculum. We have a limited budget but are changing our reading texts so we need new supplemental material. I am requesting a fiction set, nonfiction set, and a set of the series WHO WAS.....about famous people throughout history.

This will help around 120 students in the third grade and will help multiple teachers to teach reading, social studies, and science standards while we get used to our new textbooks and district changes.

By using these books, we hope to gain student interest in the topics we are teaching as well as give students a better understanding of what we are learning about. We hope that students will want to read these books and that they will take their interest and use it to continue to pick books out for reading that is fun.
