This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Recent research shows that, no matter how many comprehension strategies we teach kids, they will still struggle with comprehension if they have no background knowledge on what they're reading. As a reading teacher, my goal is to build that background knowledge. It's an overwhelming task, so I try to focus on topics they will find especially interesting.
None of my students have ever heard of Harry Houdini, but he lived a fascinating life that I think they'll enjoy learning about.
This book also teaches about the time period and has interesting information about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the Spiritualism movement. I know my students will love reading about seances!
I would also like to keep my classroom library current by adding these graphic novels that are rated the best of 2023. The kids love it when we get new books!
And of course, the Jolly Ranchers are for rewards. Students are much more motivated to raise their hands and participate when there's candy involved!
