My Students

I teach in rural central Virginia.

My classroom contains 25 students, equal split boys and girls. My class is a vibrant, enthusiastic bunch who love to learn when given the opportunity! My school is a Title I K-5 elementary school. We have about 600 students total in the school. The mission of our school is to involve students in meaningful learning experiences which develop individuals who are empowered to succeed in an innovative, changing, and information-based world.

My Project

Student's will be writing responses and creating presentations for their Who Was? person. They will do research using WAS and computers to create a formal PowerPoint presentation and written response for the class. Their goal will be to become the person they are researching. After completing the biography, students will determine the most important facts and synthesize the collected information into a PowerPoint presentation and written response. Students will consider: *What did you know about your famous person before reading the biography? *What do you know now? *What is he/she most remembered for? Using the Who Was? Series will help students familiarize themselves with nonfiction texts and text features. This project will address Science, Writing, and Reading Standards of Learning.

This series is an interactive and creative way to present nonfiction texts to a group. The series will reinforce our 5th grade standards which require students to know inventors, historical figures, and writers. Additionally, I believe using book series is an excellent way to grab students' interest in reading. Book series are a powerful tool for building readers in the classroom.
