Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach third grade in a high-need, low-income community. I feel blessed to be able to teach in a community of such caring optimistic children despite some of their challenges.
Many of my students do not have the opportunity for someone to read to them daily at home. In order to learn to read students need that opportunity to hear a story being read by a fluent reader.
A listening center will be used during our literacy block daily. A listening center has many benefits. Some of those benefits are: it will enrich a students’ multi-sensory experiences with books, students will develop listening skills which is needed in order to learn to read, students will learn vocabulary and narrative structure and understanding of language, students that have difficulty reading can follow the reading of the text at their own pace and repeat the process if necessary, and most importantly listening to a great story will instill a love of reading and a desire to read on their own.
Your generosity will give the students the opportunity to explore books in a new way and help the apprehensive readers feel more confident in their reading abilities. I can’t think of one student that would turn down an opportunity to hear a story. Kids love hearing stories!
