This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kids have had zero experience with chemistry. They come from low income families that do not have the funds to place their students in summer camps or costly after school science programs.
The science topic of matter can be somewhat abstract; what better way for my students to understand elements, mixtures and compounds than by conducting their very own hands-on experiments?
The kit and accessories I am requesting will do just that. And hopefully, it will spark interest in a student or two, who may just grow up to become a scientist!
My Project
My students have had very minimal exposure to chemistry, and I would love to introduce hands-on [SAFE] experiments to them. I want to share the joy and curiosity of chemical reactions that I was so fortunate to experience in my childhood, creating in me a super science geek. I want to share this excitement about science with my students, and hopefully expose some of them to a future career opportunity.
Students can read about facts and information all day long, but until they experience it for themselves, will they fully gain complete understanding.
There was a very powerful demonstration in a PD that gave different table groups different "apples". One table had a real apple, one table a plastic apple, one table a picture of an apple, and the last table had the word "apple" printed on a piece of paper. Which group was able to most accurately describe what an apple is? Obviously the table with the real apple; that was able to fully experience the smell, the texture, the shape, the color, and the taste of an actual apple. This is how I want my students to experience science. Not just to read about it; but to gain the full experience and understanding of it.
