Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We teach a diverse group of 4th graders from urban centers in the Bronx. All of the students in our school work hard to to uphold our Core Values. My class , in particular, has really shown interest in making big strides in their education this year and are committed to being STEADFAST in sticking to their goals. In our classroom rules the first thing they agreed on was to never give up. They are resilient and brave.

During the week our school has set the expectation that students not only develop academically but social-emotionally as well.

We model empathy, collaboration, appreciation and persistence in the hopes that our students will internalize these qualities and become well rounded global citizens that respect one another and appreciate diversity.

On Fridays we celebrate those students that have best exemplified our core values throughout the week by having a "POWERFUL" celebration. Students can play games, draw or even read texts that interest them. Being able to participate in collaborative free time reinforces becoming a more well rounded member of the school community.

My Project

Setting aside a little time every week so that students can collaborate and play together builds community in the classroom. Games give our students a moment to have a "brain break" and just have fun. Most of the games we had in our classroom were outdated and just needed a little refreshing.

Problem Solving, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction BINGO are all games that students can play together.

These games in particular get students thinking and processing faster and collaboratively. I also want to provide my students with strategic games like Connect 4 and support my tactile learners with geometric art creation by using the Spirograph.
