This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"You are the cat's pajamas!" My comment is received with blank stares or giggles. Learning a new language is a challenge. Imagine trying to master the idiosyncrasies of English as a 9-year-old English learner.
After being restructured in 2007 due to poor results on standardized tests, our school has made a 180 degree turn around.
We have made so much academic progress that we won the title of California Distinguished school in 2010.
We serve a high minority population with many of our students being English learners. More than 80 percent of our children qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Some may say that teaching this population is hopeless; that you can't make progress with these kids. The team at my school has proved the naysayers wrong. We are preparing these kids to be on a level playing field with their more fortunate peers.
My Project
Good readers make good writers. In fourth grade the California standards for writing become quite vigorous. I am requesting a variety of books that will serve as mentor texts for writing. It is my hope that these texts will provide a foundation for developing the six writing traits: ideas, voice, sentence fluency, organization, conventions, and word choice.
Inspiration and confidence.
Writing can be a daunting task. These books will provide a springboard for my students. I hope to inspire a love and excitement for writing with these mentor texts.
