Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a rural farming community. Most of the students are first or second-generation immigrants. Nearly all of the students' parents work in the fields nearby. The students at this school are devoted to graduating and moving on to college to live the life that their parents want for them.

Historically these students have underperformed in mathematics, but with increased funding and use of technology, we have had drastic improvements.

My Project

In my math classroom, I have a Newton's Cradle. That simple machine has taught some students more than they could get out of fifteen lectures on the subject. I want more of these puzzles and physics paradox toys to help engage these students that don't always perform well in class.

A popular technique right now is to give students fidget toys, but why not give them something to fidget with that will also teach them?

The puzzles and toys I have selected will help my students to understand mathematical and physical principles in a more active way. I will also use some of the toys in actual instruction to demonstrate a concept.
