My Students
"History is boring!" "This book is boring!" Well, what if we could end this discussion and put our students in charge of the history they learn as they author the history book.
My students walk into my classroom from a variety of walks of life.
Some enjoy the comforts of home cooked meals every night, and others don't have a home to call their own. My students know the expectation I set for them and work together to rise to that standard. I create a college-going culture in my classroom of middle school students, with expectations that are set at that level no matter their socioeconomic backgrounds. My students will be college ready so that the door will be open for them when their time arrives.
My students are creative, design thinkers who are challenging the "old" way of learning, focusing now on a project-based learning environment that engages their busy minds to create real life experiences.
My Project
My students need resources to show them the purpose behind the children's books they grew up reading and hearing. As we begin to explore the three Mesoamerican cultures, Maya, Inca, and Aztec Empires, my students will explore how children's books are a great way to pass along information about new topics. These materials will help students gain a better understanding of what they will be working towards in their Mesoamerican project, designing an A to Z book of a Mesoamerican cultural group providing important information to their audience.
Your generous donation of a selection of children's literature to model their project as well as menu boards to aid in discussion will help students identify the purpose behind their writing as well as provide a guide to public speaking.
This project will provide students an opportunity to create meaningful and relevant learning for what would traditionally be a textbook-driven lesson. Students will be creating an A to Z book collaboratively with their peers, and these materials will support them in their process for completing this project, bringing medieval history to a relevant medium.
