I will be teaching eighteen, third graders this year. There are seven designated ESE, which means they either have a learning or behavioral disability or a language impairment. I want to incorporate flexible seating in the classroom to allow for all of my students' movement and opportunities to work in a space that is most beneficial to them. I would like to offer different seating options for independent or partner work, rather than the basic school chairs given to the school.
My Project
I am one of two designated teachers with special needs students on my grade level. Most students in general, regardless of a specific learning disability require some sort of movement and flexible seating options such a wobble stools, cushions and a small/low table. I would like to offer the opportunity for several choices for students to focus in a spot that feels best for them. Over the past few years, when offered the chance to move from the desk to do their work, almost all students have opted for a different work space. Unfortunately, I currently do not have many options for all eighteen of my students to get to choose each time.
