Who is Martin Luther King?

My students need books about African Americans who have helped to shape America to what it is today. I am asking for books about Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Thurgood Marshall, Louis Armstrong, Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks just to name a few.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 5th grade. I work in a low income school. So much emphasis is put into reading and math that history falls by the wayside. Most of the money that the school has goes towards test prep materials for the students.

I was walking down the hallway with my students two days before Martin Luther King's birthday and I stopped in front of a poster of Martin Luther King Jr. One of my students pointed at the picture and asked me "Who is that?" My mouth just dropped open. I looked at my other students and most of them were clueless also. One of my students knew it was Martin Luther King but had no idea why he was famous. All they knew was that we don't have school on his birthday. I asked them if they knew who Rosa Parks and Malcom X were? Most of them looked at me with blank stares. The few who recognized the names didn't know why they were famous either. I made the decision at that point that my students needed to know about famous African Americans who helped to shape America. I have an underrepresented population of African American students in my class and in the school as well. The only African Americans that my students know are the rappers that they see on T.V. They didn't know that February was Black History Month either. I was applauded and now feel it is my duty not only as a teacher but as an American to teach my students about African Americans who took great strides throughout history.

My problem with teaching this to my students is that I do not have adequate resources in my classroom to teach them. The few books that I do have are old and worn. There are not enough for my students to even share. I am asking for some books about famous African Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, Louis Armstrong, George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Mahammad Ali, just to name a few. This will help me to effectively teach my students about these very important figures throughout history.

I need your help to bring this project to life. My students need to learn about these important people. It is my duty as a teacher and and adult to teach my students about all of the wonderful things that African Americans have done. Please help me to educate my students. I do not want the year to end without giving my students this very important part of history to take with them.
