Help me give my students the materials and tools to create professional looking Scientist Trading Cards which can help promote inclusion and diversity.
Although our school is located in the center of the Silicon Valley, about 50% of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged, about 25% are English language learners, and about 50% qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. Less than 50% of the parents have had some college or graduated from college.
My students are full of energy, creativity, passion, perseverance, and diversity.
Working with middle school students keeps me up with the latest clothing, music, and video game trends. I am forced to be a lifelong learner when trying to incorporate their interests into my classroom.
My Project
At the beginning of the school year, students are asked to draw a scientist. Many of them draw images of someone who looks like Albert Einstein with the crazy hair, a lab coat, a pair of glasses, and chemistry glassware in their hands. Students are familiar with trading cards as a quick way to learn facts and begin collections. They have also used interactive cards like Pokemon card to share with their friends.
By creating trading cards of scientists from diverse backgrounds, students can grow in their appreciation and awareness that anyone can be a scientist.
Students will hopefully believe that they can be a scientist too. Students can share these individual cards with their classmates and continue to grow in their understanding of diversity in the field of science.
Although we are not in person learning, these cards could be created as a collection this year that I can have out in subsequent years.
