This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I soon discovered that many of my students don't have books at home when I assigned the 1st Reading Response Log. Many of them don't come from "reading households" where they see their family members reading for enjoyment. I want my students to discover the sense of "getting lost in a book."

All of our students qualify for the free and reduced-price lunch program, and many of them have no books in their home, and have never set foot in the public library.

At second grade, they are still eager to try new things, and have little fear of making mistakes. However, the older they get, the less enthusiastic they are when it comes to putting effort into seemingly daunting school tasks. The earlier they discover the joys of reading and become lifelong readers the better!

My Project

I moved to a new school this year, and initially had no books in our classroom library! Through the help of thoughtful teachers, my students can now choose books of interest to them, and at their reading level. I want to make our classroom library vibrant and inviting in order to help instill a love of books. Beanbag chairs will provide a comfy option when wanting to curl up with a good book!

Making my classroom library a desirable focal point of our classroom will send the message that reading is both important and fun.

If I can instill a love for reading into my students, it will open up their world! They can read about places that they've never been. They can discover it as a hobby that may keep them out of trouble when they're older. Becoming life-long readers will turn them into life-long learners, and set them up for success!
