Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Read aloud is the most powerful tool to teach children literacy. I am a 3rd and 4th grade literacy teacher in an urban district in Maryland. The motto in my school is that all of our students are college bound. My students know exactly what year that they'll be graduating from college.

The majority of my students are not exposed to literature once they leave school. Therefore, it is up to me to read to them as many books as possible. This simple exposure to more pieces of literature is so important to help my students become well-rounded individuals, which all of the best colleges are looking for.

I am asking for books that lend themselves to teaching certain skills, i.e. main idea and summarizing. These are books by well known authors, such as Eve Bunting, Kevin Henkes, and Eric Carle. I will read these books to the students to teach my lesson. When I read to my students on the carpet, they are so engaged!

Please provide my students the exposure to many different types of literature. With your help you will be assisting my students with the basic first steps to becoming more well-rounded students.
