Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty/high ELL population school. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. It is my goal to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences while also holding them to a high level of standards.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to be read to, they love to try new things, and they love lots of positive attention. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. By controlling their experience in the classroom in a creative and positive way, I hope to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
This year I brought in an old wooden barn for my students to explore and was surprised to find that it quickly became one of their favorite imaginative play sets in the classroom. I find both boys and girls drawn to the variety of opportunities the barn offers them- who is the farmer, who wants to be the horse, can a snowman join, I want to be the person in charge of all the ranchers, etc. Unfortunately, the barn has started to fall apart and my efforts at reviving it with super glue have taken their toll.
My students deserve to build their vocabulary, language, and social skills through play while also having their decision making and creative abilities highlighted!
This doll house chosen for this project is sturdy and open to possibilities- nothing is glued to the walls or the floors, making certain that the students can be in charge of what it becomes! The dolls are multi-cultural so my students can see themselves in their play while the furniture offers a familiar setting to get their imaginations blooming.
Finally, I hope to offer further opportunities for exploring creation and design in the classroom through a small variety of STEM toys. Although one is most familiar with role playing via dramatic play, I have seen the idea come alive through that of the engineer and builder roles. By including Tinker Toys, Gears, and Legos in this project, I hope to help students who are disinterested in traditional role playing grasp their own imaginative flair!
