This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I provide speech and language therapy for three to five year old children in an early childhood education center. My students often have risk factors and most are in a special education setting. I work with students that have developmental delays, selective mutism, Autism and speech and language delays.
My students work on functional communication, vocabulary, social skills, basic concepts, listening and following directions and speech sound production to improve communication skills in the classroom and home environments.
The goal is to better prepare my students for Kindergarten.
My Project
I have learned that the use of objects in my therapy is invaluable! My students respond so much better when they have a hands-on object that they can manipulate. While pictures can be used with some older, more mature students, my youngest students do not attend well to picture cues.
My goal is to build a collection of community helper objects to aid in teaching young students different occupations and essentially be able to answer 'who' questions pertaining to professionals.
I plan to have my students identify an object from a label. I will also show them one of the objects and see he or she can provide the label. Further, I will ask 'who will deliver the mail?' My goal is to have my students pick up the mail carrier!
Since many of students struggle to answer 'who' questions, I am going to use these objects to help them remember each occupation and the job he or she performs! Increasing vocabulary skills is such a vital part of my job and these objects are sure to help the students increase that skill set!
