My Students

My students are from a large, urban community in Los Angeles that welcomes families from all over the world. Each family is unique and tries its best with limited resources. We are a Title I school in a low-income community, and there are twenty-four students in my classroom. In addition, over half of my students read below grade level and struggle with basic number sense. Every child receives free breakfast, lunch, and supper each day. This is a community in need.

My students are creative, enthusiastic learners that miss learning in a school setting.

On March 13th, my students walked out the door, assuming they would be back by April. They left all of their school supplies and books in the classroom. Consequently, my students have been learning from home since then. This presents a challenge, as most of my students do not have access to much-needed school supplies like crayons and whiteboards. Our lessons are limited to digital content. With school resources, we could explore art, work on a project, or play math games at home. My students would benefit from a variety of classroom resources to help increase their success in our new Distance Learning platform.

My Project

I have been a teacher for over 20 years, and I could have never predicted this moment in time. On March 13th, when we departed our classroom, we never thought that it would be our last time setting foot in our room. We kept most of our school supplies in the classroom, thinking that we would be back in two weeks. That reality soon became a distant dream, and our new reality of Distance Learning has proven to be a difficult journey.

School success is dependent on having access to the right resources.

Right now, my students are at home trying to complete their studies without the necessary tools. Throughout the day, they are asked to write, draw, cut, and color. This seems like an easy task unless you don't have supplies at hand. My students are sheltering in place and cannot go out and purchase the supplies they need.

This project is important for their success. They need these resources to complete their third-grade education. As Americans, we need to step up and help these kids in need. Do not let Covid-19 rob them of their education!
