This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are eager to learn, curious and a joy to teach. They are deserving of the best possible education and that is what I strive to provide for them. My school, located in East Palo Alto, serves Latino, Polynesian and African-American students.
Nearly all of my students come from low income households where the resources are often limited and families are stretched thin.
A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless. I am trying to teach them how to use technology and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies. I am committed to offer them the best possible education.
My Project
My students are engaged in distance learning and eager to grow as readers and writers! During our Zoom lessons, the students are encouraged to write and show their answers so as to receive immediate feedback. Sometimes they do this on paper and it is hard to see their answers.
Having their own whiteboards and magnetic letters will allow each second grade student to fully participate in class activities.
The whiteboards will be double sided and magnetic. One side of the board is lined so that will be perfect for practicing handwriting, dictation and other word work. Students will also be able to use the whiteboards during their independent learning time.
Each student will also receive a set of lowercase magnetic letters. These are perfect for word making activities. The vowels are red and the consonants are blue so this will simplify word building. In our small guided reading groups the children will work on sight words, vocabulary, phonics and other word work that matches their reading level. I also have volunteers working with individual students in breakout rooms so these will also be used for tutoring and one on one support,
