Vertical workspaces create an environment for collaborative learning and thinking. Using the ideas from "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics" by Peter Liljedahl, I began using vertical workspaces in the classroom for the last couple months of school. This small change transformed my math time. All students were engaged in solving and explaining their problems. The students who were struggling were asking questions to understand the thinking of their partner. When we finished with using the vertical workspaces and moved to their individual learning, there were fewer questions because the students had a better grasp of the concept from practicing with a partner with vertical workspaces. Some of the students would get up and use the vertical workspaces to reason through a hard problem on their assignment. This change in my math instruction was very effective and I want to incorporate it into my math instruction for this year.
The students loved using vertical workspaces and were excited for the math practice time!
Last year I laminated poster boards and taped them up around my room. The laminated poster boards were hard to erase and not as effective as real white boards. I am asking for large foldable whiteboards that I can use during my math and science time as vertical workspaces.
The goals for this project are to have these vertical workspace available to use on a daily basis during math practice time and individual math work time. I will use the data from their summative math tests to see if there is improvement from previous years.
