Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school serves a high number of socially and economically disadvantaged students. Most of my students qualify for free lunch in school. My fifth-grade class is very diverse in their academics. They range from far below basic to advanced levels. Some are students with special needs and accommodations and others are students that need enrichment. Some are English Language Learners while others are fluent in the English language. But they are all eager for an education; however, the lack of resources prevents them from getting motivated and truly showcasing their talents.
Many of my students have a variety of hardships at home, but at school, I try to make it a positive place where they can grow, learn, and be successful.
They come to school with big dreams, and I want to provide the best learning environment for them.
My Project
Students will be trading in their pencils for thin, black whiteboard markers and lapboard erasers throughout the day to support their daily learning experience.
Shifting away from traditional resources like pencils and eraser caps to whiteboard markers and lapboard erasers will make learning fun and more engaging.
The teacher will not be the only one using markers in class anymore. Students will be using the whiteboard markers daily in all subject areas to practice, refine and master target skills being taught. For example, students will be able to use their whiteboard markers and erasers to solve math word problems independently then share their strategies with their peers. They will also, be able to take notes when we read from our Text for Close Reading during English Language Arts time, as well as, identify and analyze specific skills and strategies scheduled for that week to focus on such as main ideas and details, inferences, summarize, and other literary elements.
