This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
With these white boards, students will develop their learning as they break into small collaborative learning groups and engage in AVID tutorials. AVID tutorials give students the opportunity to ask questions about difficult concepts or assignments they don’t fully understand. The tutorial leaders (often tutors or peers) guide them through the process of discovering the answers themselves, encouraging deeper comprehension. Rather than simply giving answers, AVID tutorials emphasize inquiry-based learning. Students engage in questioning and problem-solving, which helps them develop critical thinking skills that are transferable across all subjects. Through the tutorial process, students gain confidence in their academic abilities by actively participating in discussions and collaborating to find solutions to problems. AVID tutorials foster a collaborative learning environment where students not only receive support but also contribute by helping their peers. This strengthens both their understanding of the material and their communication skills.
The white boards will allow students to gather their thoughts in one place during AVID tutorials (small learning groups), as their peers help them understand and master challenging content through guided inquiry and peer collaboration.
My AVID (advancement via individual determination) students are a group of driven and hardworking students who are eager to learn in the classroom. A majority of my students are first-generation, which motivates them to do well in school in order to be the first in their family to attend college. With this project, I hope to encourage my students to take ownership of their learning as they become thriving members of their community.
