My Students

I currently teach first grade. The students are excited every day to be in school. The students come from low-income households. At school, I want to give them every opportunity to learn and explore. They love that they are learning to add and subtract in math. Also, students are currently beginning to read! This is very exciting and they try and read everything they can from posters to books.

The children and families in our school community are a diverse cross-section of many different cultures, ethnic groups, and languages.

We have an English as a Second Language Program. We educate children from 24 different countries, who speak 15 different languages. The students speak Bosnian, Spanish, Arabic, Albanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Sudanese, Somalian, Swahili, French, Kirundi, Bantu, Burmese, Vietnamese, Nepali, and Mai-Mai.

My Project

Fluency is extremely important, as it helps foster comprehension. Our students don't know what good reading sounds like and they are not fluent readers so they struggle in making meaning out of the words they do read. Fluency phones (or whisper phones) are plastic piping that resemble a phone that you hold to your ear and your mouth. They allow students the opportunity to hear themselves as they read. This direct focus helps students build phonemic awareness. Directly hearing the sounds improves the ability to recognize and distinguish the sound structure of language. We use the phones for activities such as blending, identifying and manipulating sounds. When students are ready for reading text, the phones allow them to hear themselves as well as read-aloud without disturbing others in the group next to them.

Donations for fluency phones will give our students the opportunity to become better readers.

It will help each student develop the reading skills they need to be successful in our world. Our ELL students can benefit from becoming proficient in the English Language and our lowest economic students can become better readers in an effort to break the cycle of poverty and reach their goals for success.
