Dear donors,
Thank you for taking your time out to read our room's proposal for a class set of Whisperphones, a learning tool . Currently, I am the only 1st grade bilingual teacher at P.S. 207 and I find it very hard for some students (especially students who just arrived to the country) to learn the English language correctly because they are not able to self-monitor or check their fluency in the English language.
When I came across this learning tool I knew it was the PERFECT solution to help my struggling students. The Whisperphone allows students to hear themselves as they read, count, and think aloud. This will definitely help my students in areas like phonemic awareness because they can self-monitor/self-correct their mistakes more effectively if they are able to hear their own voices! Also, it reduces classroom noise during class activities like independent reading! (A teacher's dream – a tool that can help students learn and keep the classroom noise level down to a minimum!!!)
The Whisperphone will be integrated into all the subjects including word study, reading, writing, and math. Students will use the tool during the word study part of the day to hear the individual phonemes in a word and others will be able to say more accurately the sounds of the alphabet. During independent reading, this learning tool will dramatically increase the student focus! It will motivate students to read their own books because they will be able to hear themselves read while improving their comprehension and fluency! During writing time, students can use the Whisperphone to re-read their work to hear mistakes and fix them. Finally, students will use the Whisperphone during math to solve word problems by re-reading the questions and checking their own written explanations.
My class has 22 students and I highly believe a classroom set will benefit the students on many levels beyond language acquisition. Also, this is a tool that will be recycled so new students will benefit as well.
