Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Crossing out, constantly erasing, or the never ending use of whiteout that at times spills, equals time lost when students should be tapping into their creative juices and writing. All this stems from trying to get it "right" the first time instead of learning from mistakes.

My school is designed for students who have remained in middle school for an additional two years, which means they enter high school overage and under-credited.

They are at a point in their lives where they want to catch up and move forward, but struggle both social-emotionally and academically. Many have such a fear of failure they do not see the advantage of learning from mistakes in order to improve the skills they already have. The goal has been to go beyond the academic realm, tap into the students innate potential and strengths they already possess, and have them grow from there. To this end, dry erase tables allow students to try new things, erase their mistakes and move forward in a non-threatening or evaluative way.

My Project

White erase tables, markers, and erasers will allow the students the opportunity to explore and try new methods and ideas without the stress or belief of being judged or evaluated. The goal is to allow students to write out their thoughts, ideas, questions, generate ideas through group work in a medium that allows them to erase and start over prior to putting pen to paper. Through this process, students will learn how to grow not just from brainstorming, but also that mistakes are something they can learn and grow from. Changing the negative perception that mistakes are bad to a positive view that mistakes are a tool for growth and exploration, and that once one realizes what they do not want to do, the possibilities are endless.

The supplies I am requesting will enable students to sit in groups of three, providing them the opportunity to work individually or as a group, and just sitting together encourages dialogue, which in turn sparks ideas.

Moving away from the "chalk and talk" approach, the tables will allow for students to work collaboratively. Currently my school purchased the license for SmartBoard, and combined with the tables will turn my classroom into a fully interactive environment.
