Do you remember reading a great book about something, and then cooking something special that reminded you of that book? Many of my students have never experienced cooking with a grown up.
My classroom is very diverse.
They love to learn in a fun way and love to eat special snacks that we have created together after reading a great book. I try to engage them using picture books and cooking as much as possible. Working with pencil and paper does not always work, so I try to think outside the box. Most of my students come from below poverty level homes. Our school tries to supply us with as many things as they can afford, but this is not an easy task. Budgets have been cut and there are only funds for textbooks.
My Project
My "Feed USA" project that I am requesting funding for is for a stand up mixer and the book "Thunder Cake" by Patricia Polacco. A stand up mixer will greatly improve all of our baking experiences and instruction because we would be able to make a larger quantity of items for the students to share with their families and make other items instead of just cakes and cookies. With this interactive activity, I will be able to bring in literature, writing, math, and science lessons to enhance and engage student learning in a fun way.
Our class project through "Feed USA" is important to teach students how to cook in a culture that loves fast food.
It will help teach students to eat well, while making literature come alive in the classroom. More important, it gives students a chance to interact with an adult in a fun way to encourage creativity in the classroom.
