Vocabulary is powerful! It is necessary for both verbal communication and internal comprehension. My second graders have not yet grasped its importance. Help me show them how fun and enjoyable learning vocabulary can be!
My students are second graders in an small, urban Texas school district.
About fifty percent of my students are ESL, meaning that English is their second language and their families speak another language at home. Nearly one hundred percent of my students are considered to be at risk and/or economically disadvantaged. My students love school and want to succeed, however they have not all always had the best opportunities available to them in life. Therefore, it is essential they are afforded positive learning experiences in school.
I teach two classes of reading and writing, so these materials would be used by a total of 44 students. My students will be able to use these games/activities to practice vocabulary skills during their literacy workstation time. Since the activities are self checking, students would be able to use them independently and be successful. Students will learn new vocabulary and practice using prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, antonyms, and context clues to determine the meaning of new words. These activities will reinforce the concepts taught during whole group lessons in a fun and engaging way.
My students need engaging, self-check vocabulary games and activities such as Hot Dot quiz cards and vocabulary match-ups to use independently during literacy station time.
Please help support the vocabulary development of my students. Increasing vocabulary is an essential step to becoming a successful reader and communicator. Helping my students become passionate about vocabulary will have a life long impact!
