My Students

My kids are such enthusiastic learners who are constantly on the go and always curious to know what we are doing next! Overall right now I have a very talkative class but we can't forget they are five and six and need interaction with each other whenever possible. We do lots of brain breaks that allow them to get up and move and burn some of their never ending energy. They are a great group of kids and I am very lucky to call them mine.

My Project

Think about when you go to Starbucks to complete some work. Why do you choose to work there? Where do you choose to sit? I usually gravitate towards the comfy seating choices like the couches and big chairs, and yet, I see people choose the tables and chairs over and over again. Regardless, when you walk into Starbucks, you have choice. You get to choose where you sit. No one checks you in and directs you to a spot, telling you that you must sit there for the remainder of the day to do your work. If you need to get up, walk around, or choose a different seat, you are free to do so.

As I sat in our local Starbucks this past summer, I looked around and thought—why can’t my classroom look like this?

I would love for my students to feel the same way when they come into my classroom. I can see some of them laying on a bath math working on the floor, sitting on a stool, balancing on a yoga ball and even kneeling over a low table. Freedom to pick where you sit and where you can be most successful. That is our goal as teachers to ensure our students are given the best tools for them to learn and become better little people.
