Help me give my students the opportunity to see ecosystems at work and interact with them with a water garden that contains plants and fish and a terrarium with plants growing in soil.

My Students

My students come from a small, rural town in North Carolina. We are a Title I funded school. The children at our school come from very diverse backgrounds, many living in nuclear or single-parent homes. We also have a large number of students who are bilingual or whose parents do not speak English as their native language. I look forward to many more years teaching in my neighborhood school where I and my three grown children attended elementary school.

My Project

These supplies will give the students an opportunity to observe ecosystems in their classroom. When we discuss various ecosystems we will learn how the environment, the soil, and the amount of light changes how plants and animals need to adapt so they can best grow.

This project will provide them with a traditional terrarium environment with plants in soil as well as plants growing in water, these plants in turn will clean the water that our class fish live in.

Not only will they see how the ecosystems work they will get to see how species depend on one another and how they also help each other. We will make observations using similar plants to see which one has the best environment for survival.

They will do this while learning to care for plants as well as class fish! Pets are good for the soul!
