Which came first...the chicken or the egg? We could debate this forever! However my students will gain a wonderful learning experience by observing the development of chick embryos with our incubator! The cell function/structure materials will further their learning of how these organs form into organisms. I teach in a low socio-economic area where teaching materials and motivation are hard to come by. I will use these enriching materials in my 7th grade science classroom to do just that! Bring life into our classroom right before their eyes ...literally! These will help improve our critical thinking skills for improved test scores as well.
My students are in a community where field trips, summer vacations, and lavish stocked labs are not available to them. The materials they get to use in the classrooms are from grants, and donations. They rarely get to see anything that is so enriching and hands-on. Can't Wait!
Arkansas Frameworks LS.3.7.1, LS.3.7.2, LS.3.7.3, LS.3.7.4, and LS.3.7.5 state that students actually dissect a poultry egg and understand the science behind its formation and to describe embryo formation. Arkansas Frameworks LS.2.7.1, LS.2.7.2, LS.2.7.3, LS.2.7.4, and LS.2.7.5 expand on how cells play a major roll in all these formations. My students will see, hear, and actually be a part of this process. These newly learned skills will enhance test scores! It will reinforce critical thinking skills, gathering and analyzing data skills and even their math skills.
This grant will help my students to further their knowledge of cells and embryo formation. The grant will provide my students with the materials to become better motivated in their learning. It will be a turning point for those few who have given up on trying to be a better student. And the student who has that proficient test score....well that says it all!
