As a teacher in a juvenile detention center, my mission is to provide my students with as many "life experiences" as possible!

Many of my students come from low-income homes. However, they are hard-working, eager to demonstrate what they know, and desire the option to experience new things. We try to provide them with strategies and experiences that will give them other options when they are released.

My Project

My students are indoors the entire time they are with us, as we are a secure detention facility. As a result, we do not have the traditional options of having a greenhouse or outdoor growing facility. This Hydroponics Center would allow us to expand our science unit! In addition, we can teach the students about growing their own vegetables, and they can experience the taste of fresh produce! Our hope is that this will inspire them to create their own gardens (whether traditionally via soil or via hydroponics) once they return home. This is one of the many valuable life-long skills we try to have our kids exit with!
