Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a great bunch. It's always a mix of abilities and personalities. As a teacher, you'll get students who are overachievers, can-doers, and the less than ambitious kind. Regardless of the students' caliber, a teacher always asks the best out of them. This is why teaching art is a great way for all students to show what they can do.

My students come from a community that has one of the highest poverty levels and almost 100% of my students qualify for free or reduced-rate lunches.

I also have a large ESL presence which makes teaching a bit more difficult. My students push through many obstacles and many times endure broken air conditioners and lack of funds for proper materials.

My students are not fancy, overbearing, or have a chip on their shoulders. They have a willingness to try and do their best regardless of their socioeconomic status. My students have a funny way of thinking about things. One example is when students who do remarkably well think their work is subpar. This is when I say their work is beautiful. They disagree and keep working on it and sometimes start over.

My Project

We live in a age of digital literacy. That is the way we live now and it will not change. In art, we often have new technology that makes our art experience richer. Sometimes we often forget the past and the history of art and forget that part of the art experience is the process. With printmaking, there is a fun and multi step process that has a great reward for my students.

Carving on Lino is a rich, storied art activity that doesn't lose it's appeal.

When students work diligently on a design and carve it on lino, they get a satisfaction in their craftsmanship. Once they get a feel for the printing of their design, they want to make editions for friends and family. It is an experience that is different than what they have ever done. It brings their human experience into the past who have found the joy of printmaking.
