My students need a diversified classroom library consisting of a variety of genres, levels, and themes as well as wipe and write markers.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How do you get reluctant readers to fall in love with reading? Why is that important? Dr. Seuss writes "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." This quote demonstrates the importance of getting kids reading!
Although my students are members of one of the largest middle schools in our borough, they learn differently than their peers.
My classroom consists of sixth, seventh, and eight grade special education students who are functioning far below their grade level. Each student is exempt from taking state exams and completes alternate assessment portfolios throughout the year. Being in eighth grade and reading at a first grade level can be difficult for their self-esteem and creates negative feelings towards reading. By building a library and a classroom that is rich in effective and appropriate reading resources, I believe I will see a change in their attitudes towards reading. High-interest, low-leveled books will enable them to read at their independent level and flourish throughout the school year.
My Project
The classroom reading materials selected will be used in a variety of ways. Picture students exploring the library, eyes wide open and eager to discover what is inside each book. Students will find books organized by genre, level, theme, and authors. I am requesting popular series, including Junie B. Jones and Cam Jansen, plus the "I Can Read" collection. When choosing a "just right" book from the leveled bin they will move to the bean bags and find themselves reading the words and understanding the story. During instructional time, I will select books that are appropriate for each of my reading groups. Whether we focus on close reading strategies or practice newly learned reading strategies the resources will be put to good use!
A self-contained, special education classroom is one in which students, paraprofessionals, and teachers work with one another and learn from one another.
One of the key components of this is a strong library full of appropriate texts to be used with effective teaching strategies. Providing my students with a number of independent texts will allow students to take home books to share with their families their success in reading. A classroom with a rich library is one that enforces learning.
