Where Should I Sit? Flexible Seating for 4th Grade Class
My students need a variety of flexible seating options, such as ball chairs, wobble cushions, and beanbag chairs, within the classroom so that they are able to move freely and find a place that best suits their needs.

My Students
Step into my classroom and you will find a diverse group of students, engaged in their own way, at their own pace and ability at the task at hand. You may see two or three sets of students clustered around the paraprofessionals, chatting and completing their math work. You may see students working independently or in pairs in the library nook on the floor, spread out and lying down. You may see two or three struggling students working with me on the smartboard. We are engaged and we are flexible.
I am a teacher of students with disabilities in a low-income/high poverty district.
My students come from immigrant families, foster families, and a variety of family structures. I work to give them positive reinforcement and as much love as they need. I cannot control what goes on outside of my classroom, but my classroom is a space where they can be who they need to be and learn how they need to learn.
My Project
Flexible seating options will improve my students' engagement throughout the day in all subject areas. My students struggle staying still and calm for extended periods of time. These seating options will improve their attention, interest, and excitement for each activity. My goal is to create a truly inclusive space in my self-contained classroom. Flexible seating creates options, encourages choice and and self-advocacy, and increases accessibility to the subject matter.
They will be able to transition from a bean bag chair for reading, to a bouncy chair for math, to the tent for a break, to a wobble cushion for read aloud.
My students have a variety of sensory and emotional needs and would benefit from having more options throughout the day. With improved engagement these seating options will provide, my students will be able to be more successful and happy in the classroom.
