Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of my 8th graders recently asked me, while looking at a small globe in my classroom, "There is more than just us?", as he pointed to North America. I was almost speechless, he had no idea there was more in the world than the United States and Mexico.

My students are special education middle school students.

They live in a rough part of the city and rarely go anywhere outside of their neighborhood even though we live in one of the country's largest cities. They are only familiar with their own ethnic group and, as you can infer from my student's question, they are vastly unaware of the world around them. Their independent reading levels are very low so it is nearly impossible to teach current events with newspapers. They also are all very visual leaners, so me simply reading to them would not suffice. They need materials at their level.

My Project

I am requesting two different sets of weekly current event readers in order to accommodate the various reading levels in my classroom. These magazines will allow my students to engage in meaningful reading about the world and hopefully gain some perspective and appreciation for other cultures. In addition, the large map will be posted in my classroom so the students can locate the countries discussed each week.

How can my students dream big if they are not even aware of what is out there?

With your help my students can become worldly Americans who are well informed about the world around them.
