My Students
Imagine having never seen the ocean, or walked along a mountain path. Well that describes a lot of my students.
Many of them have never left the area or state we live in. Despite their lack of experiences my students are very curious about their world and love learning about different places.
I teach fifth grade in a Title One public school.
I have a very diverse classroom both academically and economically. Many of my students struggle with basic skills and are reading below grade level. Most of my students come from homes with few resources, such as books and computers, that can enhance their learning. Then I have students who come from home with these resources and others that enhance their learning. Most of my students have never left the area we live in. Despite their limited experiences all my students are curious and eager learners. They love learning about different places around the world. Even with all their different ability levels and learning styles they all learn best with hands on activities. They love projects where they get to create something. Given the right resources and opportunities I feel all my students can reach their true potential.
My Project
I'm requesting write on wipe off USA and world desktop maps, a world map molding kit, an inflatable classroom globe and social studies quiz game show software for our SMART Board. These are all resources that will be used in hands-on activities in our study of geography and social studies. My students will use the map modeling kit to learn about the location of continents, countries, oceans and different landforms. The desktop maps and inflatable globe will be used to teach my students how to read a map, use a map key and use lines of latitude and longitude. The social studies quiz game software will be used to review and reinforce what my students are learning. Many of my students struggle academically and it can be difficult to keep them engaged and focused. These resources will also be used to challenge my advanced students with individual projects. These resources will help me to meet the needs of all my students.
My students have had few experiences or the resources that can enhance their learning.
As a result many of them struggle academically. I want to make sure they have every opportunity to succeed by providing instruction that meets their individual needs. These material will help make that possible. I believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. I want all my students to become a success story, not a statistic. These resources will help make that happen.
