My students need Nystrom World Atlases and contact paper to practice map skills as well as learn to compare physical characteristics of countries, make comparisons, and draw conclusions.
Our school district is considered inner-city with 60% of our students below poverty level. We have many students affected by the traumas of our culture. (drug abuse, mental illness, poverty, etc.). We try to give them a safe place, physically and emotionally, where they can shine regardless of their situation. We work on doing the best we can with what we have! This will always be success!
Although our students come to us with a myriad of problems, they come eager to learn and are some of the most enthusiastic students I've ever taught.
We also have many students who come from typical, hardworking families. These students are lucky to go to school in such a diverse district. They will leave, as future graduates, knowing that we all have value and talents regardless of what our story is. They will be able to enter adulthood with a greater understanding of the world around them and do the best they can with what they have been given, which is all any of us can expect!
My Project
These atlases will allow my students to have the world at their fingertips. I will be able to post the coordinates of newsworthy locations and have my students find that location in the world. We can then discuss the newsworthy event. I'm introducing the Eastern Hemisphere to my students; therefore we spend a lot of time looking at the climate, precipitation, natural resources, economics and culture of several countries in the Eastern Hemisphere. These atlases provide specialty maps allowing students to compare these characteristics among countries and draw conclusions by making comparisons. I would like to keep an atlas in each desk so student have easy access to this information. Covering these atlases with contact paper will ensure that they last for several years.
