My Students
Can you imagine how difficult your life would be if you didn't have the ability to communicate your wants and needs? To know what you wanted to say, but couldn't say it? This is a situation many of my students are in every day. Verbal communication is a natural function we all take for granted.
I work in a NYC school.
This is a specialized, self-contained classroom school for students who are severely disabled, either physically or intellectually. It is a high school/occupational training center which is solely geared toward post graduation (21 years old). Most of my students are classified as having autism, some more severe than others. Several are nonverbal, meaning they don't have the ability to speak. For some, it is a physical disability and others it is a breakdown of cognitive processing. These students are capable of communication but need other resources, aids, to help them.
I have implemented "communication boards" (these are pieces of paper with picture symbols representing items I know they might need throughout the day) within the classroom. This helps tremendously, but there are other, more technologically advanced, means to address their deficits.
My Project
As a teacher of students with special needs, my work day is filled with challenges exceeded only by the challenges my students face every day of their life. Knowing that a child has the aptitude and ability to process thoughts and ideas but the inability to communicate that information is truly heart wrenching. I do everything within my means to ease that burden.
As my students have the cognitive ability to understand the concept of financial literacy: money and purchasing products, I am asking Tony and Nanar Yoseloff to help fund the purchase of an iPad and the Touchchat application for communication. This technology, along with other free financial apps for children such as P2K Money, Kids Money and Save! The Game, I can bring the important life skill of personal finances to my students and they will be able to communicate.
The education I give to these children is solely based on helping them to become independent. I thank Tony and Nanar Yoseloff for offering funding to help me reach that goal.
I am also requesting a smart cover to keep the iPad safe.
This project is so important to my students because it will help them tremendously in their pursuit towards independence.
By using the communication apps with the iPad, they will have the means to get their thoughts known to others. Our lives are about communication and I want to afford my students this opportunity. By learning and communicating about financial literacy they are one step closer to being independent. I hope Tony and Nanar Yoseloff will make that a reality.
