I teach a class of 23-25 kindergarten students in a Title 1 school consisting of 70% free lunches, 20% ESOL and 45% military students. 50% of my students' time in class is spent on a designated area which we call "group time". Previously I have had an excess carpet donated from a carpet store. This carpet (with the frayed ends taped) was used to designate our "group time". The kids would (as kids sometimes do) argue about who can sit in the front by the teacher or who can sit by their favorite friend. I became inventive (so I thought) and taped down individual squares with a different letter of the alphabet on each. I then had them choose a piece of paper (they only saw the blank side) and they had to sit on the particular letter they chose. Not only did this give them a particular place to sit, but it assisted in their learning their ABC's, which is a skill needed by the end of K. Two problems with this: First the tape kept coming up and the letters would be torn. Next, the Fire Marshall told me the carpet did not meet fire standards and had to be removed. (Ouch!). I am requesting a carpet that is large enough to accommodate my huge class (If it is from a catalog company, it comes with a letter that states it meets fire codes. I'd also like to have letters on the carpet that would assist the students in learning their letters as well as letter sounds. All students would certainly benefit from receiving this grant.
