Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students don't know where they live. I was shocked when I entered my third grade classroom last September and discovered that my students couldn't identify the city, state, or country in which they lived. I teach in a low-income area, where many of my students are recent immigrants, and very few have had any exposure to United States or world geography. Because of this lack of exposure, my students have no concept of the world they live in. The block between their house and the school is their universe; almost none have even been down to Times Square, or other significant New York sites. I am requesting the GeoSafari talking globe for my students. The globe is fully interactive, and comes with audio programs and games that guide children's learning. My students would benefit immensely from this globe. It will go a long way towards helping my students learn geography and appreciate the world they live in. It is an unbelievable tool, because it allows for fun, interactive learning, while covering the geography and world facts all students should know. A few of my friends have these globes in their classrooms, and they attest to its impact on student motivation for social studies. My students love technology, and will benefit immensely from an understanding of their world. A clear picture of the world we live in makes everything more understandable--the literature they read, the diverse groups of people they learn about, and their understanding of themselves as part of the world at large.
