I teach fourth grade in an urban part of Maryland. I have an inclusion class of 24 wonderful students who are always ready to try something that that doesn't "seem" school related! Unfortunately, this is the second year my school has not had “room” in our budget to purchase an updated science or social studies curriculum. In Maryland, students prepare all year for the MSA (No Child Left Behind ~ Yearly Progress Test). Because the MSA is currently only focused on Reading and Math ~ little time or RESOURCES are given to teach SCIENCE and SOCIAL STUDIES. This is a devastating truth in our urban school district. As a result, my students do not have the opportunity to investigate and explore subjects that interest them. This is why I need YOUR HELP! I'd like to develop two working centers focusing on cross-curricular activities that are heavily focused on science and social studies. To execute these centers I need to secure certain materials. These engaging work centers can empower my students to think outside the box and delve further into subjects. By providing my students with daily geography activities and overhead map resources, they will be exposed to the world and it's surroundings. I will also be able to expose them to the rest of the world by using wipe off world maps in our classroom and in small groups. When it comes to exposing them to aspects of social studies, I'd like to use biographies on CD to expose them to great people of our past like: Anne Frank, Thomas Jefferson & Frederick Douglas. In efforts to expose them to more people who have contributed to our rich history, I'd also like to obtain a people long ago resource box. When it comes to science having an owl pellet kit will empower my students to become true scientists and allow them to use their hands and curiosity to explore SCIENCE. YOU can make this wish possible for my students and allow them to be exposed to very important materials intended for further exploration and gain knowledge in social studies and science!!! Thanks for your time and consideration.
