My Students

What's going on in the art world, and how does that relate to students in school? Scholastic ART is a treasure trove of art reading and activities with an interactive online component guaranteed to capture students' imaginations.

I teach a fifth grade class in a New York City public school in the borough of Queens.

Our borough is one of the most culturally diverse in the nation and the many languages and global perspectives of our school community bring an intellectual richness to the students we serve. The beauty of our international community is the value it places on the arts in education. With expectations rising and an expansion of the way we learn using informational text to address the Common Core standards, the ongoing use of magazines in the classroom is invaluable. Our families appreciate the integration of arts, literacy, and project based learning as an engaging way for the children to learn. We seek creative curriculum paths that provide a new lens through which we can interpret and analyze various content areas.

My Project

Scholastic ART is a high level magazine subscription that includes news from the art world, art projects, and interesting ideas. In addition to its focus on famous artists, new works, art installations and multimedia, there artists interviews with new artists. Past subscriptions were enormously popular among the students and they couldn't wait to try some of the hands-on art projects that were included in each issue. The connection to reading, writing, art, history, science and mathematics was always fun and an eye opener for the children who had not often thought of art in those contexts. This is an expensive but very worthwhile subscription. Six issues come throughout the year and each one has enough activities to extend to various subjects. The activities of one issue alone could keep us busy for the year. Past recipients of the subscription couldn't wait for new issues to arrive and the issues were collected in a binder for future reference with projects

It's always difficult to ask for so much money at the beginning of each year yet I feel this Scholastic ART subscription is so valuable.

It would be a major contribution to the class if each of the students could receive his/her own issue. We visit museums in New York City and will relate much of what we will read to the exhibits we will attend. Our projects often come from this magazine and it would be splendid to tell my students that this subscription was funded by Donors Choose.
