My students need books, learning centers, a globe and wall maps to learn about the world around them!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Murphy's classroom raised $363
This project is fully funded
My Students
I work in an inner city school that is home to our district's SAIL program for children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our school is a Pre K-Grade 6 school where 48% of our students do not have English as a first language. 34% are students with disabilities and 84% are high needs. I teach in a sub-separate classroom. The degree of my students' disorders makes it impossible for them to be included in a general classroom setting.
My students require a highly modified curriculum, smaller class size, help with sensory regulation and a lower student/teacher ratio in order to be successful learners.
Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in science, math, English and history without many of the requisite tools to teach our students.
My students are 11 of the most creative , adventurous and funniest children I have had the pleasure of teaching. They all learn and grow in different ways through highly individualized instruction.
My Project
My students LOVE history and geography. It may be the facts and that most things stay the same but I never have more of them engaged at one time than when I am teaching a history lesson.
I develop my own individual curriculum for each student based on IEP goals.
This often puts less emphasis on history and geography and it gets pushed to the back burner. I want my students to be as well rounded as possible and academically that means more than just math and ELA.
I will use the books to help teach my students where we are, where we came from and how we got here! I will use the maps and globe to make everything as visual as I can because I know that is how they best learn.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
