Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a librarian at an inner-city school of over 800 students. We teach kids from pre-K to 8th grade. These children need a leg-up in life. 82% are so poor that they receive free or subsidized lunch. The school is situated in an area populated by immigrants. Over three-fourths of our kids speak a language other than English at home.
The school library doesn't have signs that show kids where to find books. For example, the Fiction section has books arranged in alphabetical order by author, and the Non-Fiction section has books arranged in numerical order according to the Dewey system - but I have no alphabet or number signs that show kids where, for example, the A's end and the B's begin, or the 200's area starts.
Also, the library has been affected by funding cuts. The library clerk who used to shelve books has just lost her job. This means that I will have to rely on child volunteers to help me reshelve books: all the more reason to make sure that the different sections of the library are well-delineated!
Looking in the Donorschoose.org catalog, I've found some signs that we can use in the library. They are relatively cheap, sturdy (very important in a school that caters to little kids!) and practical: instead of being glued to the library shelves, they are wedged between the books themselves, and can be moved around from year to year. And they are attractive and easy to see.
If you help finance this project, I'll be glad to send you photos of the children learning how to find their way around the media center during Library Skills class. I think that my volunteer helpers will want to send you some 'Thank You' letters, too.
Very often, kids patronize one small section of the library and don't spare much thought for all the other books. With your help, we can open the children's eyes to all the books in the media center. You'll also help the student volunteers fill the place of our missing library clerk.
Please remember that, when you give to a library, you are helping hundreds of students! Helping out a media specialist is really a great way to get maximum bang for your buck!
