My Students
I teach technology to kindergartners through sixth grade at a south side Chicago school. The majority of my students are African American, and they come from varying economic backgrounds.
Our school, as a whole, is at about 47% poverty level so we, unfortunately, don't qualify for Title I funding and many other grants to purchase items for these deserving students.
My students, like most young students, enjoy activities that require movement, that are hands-on, and that allows students to work collaboratively during class. I am always trying to find items that will help improve their learning experiences and add excitement to the classroom environment.
My Project
I do a lot of Donors Choose projects on behalf of my students. We are lucky to have quite a few technology items and the one thing I always forget to ask for is batteries! Many times it's not until we receive the item that I realize, I should have asked for batteries, too!
We are lucky to have coding robots, games, and programmable mini-computers, however they won't work without batteries!
The school never seems to have batteries either and I often bring in my own, however we just received a class set of Micro:bits, and they each require 2 AA batteries. I'm still short and I would love to have a supply on hand so the items we have actually work and are available for our students to use.
