Do you remember seeing the marching band coming down the road in a parade? Hearing the school pep band at a ball game? And how about those trombones with those cool slides! I have students who would love to grow up and be a part of that, but can't because of something out of their control: money.
My band room is full of awesome, hardworking students, who come from very diverse backgrounds.
Our school opened in the fall of 2009, is a mixture of suburban/urban students, and currently is 50% free/reduced lunch.
Our band program is rapidly growing, but the budget is shrinking. Many students cannot afford an instrument, and our school simply does not have the resources to provide them one.
My Project
These trombones are student-model instruments that are perfect for my beginner or intermediate students. These trombones will allow 4 students to learn how to play a musical instrument. They will be used in performances and everyday practice.
I teach the kids how to take care of their instruments and how to prevent damage. I help them understand that pride comes only after hard work and teamwork. I love to see the expressions on their faces after they have mastered their first few notes, or earned thunderous applause in a performance. The more instruments our school owns and loans to our students, the more students can participate in amazing musical experiences.
You can help make this happen! Imagine a student holding a cool trombone at a concert, their parents snapping photos. They feel a tremendous amount of pride inside, because of your gift. In turn, this pride is reflected throughout our school and community.
The opportunity to provide a quality music education has always been a top priority.
Music changes lives, and I have seen this happen many times. Middle school has three of the toughest years for students, and my band program gives them a place to belong, to be loved and accepted. Any time I cannot help a child, my heart breaks.
