My Students

My learning disabled students love reading good books, but there are very few in our school. My students are challenged and finding high interest, low-level reading material for them is a daunting task.

My students' reading levels would zoom if they only had stimulating, high-interest reading material available to them.

I would love to have several class sets of books so they can work together or in small groups as they navigate their way in the discussion of literary details: setting, characterization, plot, author's point of view, evidenced-based reading, and constructed responses.

My wonderful special education students need to be able to follow directions and learn to work independently. Having class sets of books will provide them with the opportunity to do so.

My Project

Many of my learning disabled students have never read an entire book! They would love reading A Long Walk To Water.

Based upon a true story, A Long Walk To Water tells the tale of a young boy who is separated from his family by war and forced to travel on foot through hundreds of miles of hostile territory.

. . he survives starvation, animal attacks, and disease, and ultimately leads a group of about 150 boys to safety in Kenya.

It is my hope that this inspirational story would challenge their imaginations, evoke empathy, and teach them about kindness and healing.
