Students often wonder, "When will I ever use math?" I would like to provide them with an answer.
I am a fifth grade math teacher at a K-5 Title One elementary school in Mississippi.
Due to the financial crisis that our state is facing, we have received numerous budget cuts. My students are excited about learning. I feel that it is my job as their teacher to make sure that they stay excited, regardless of the issues that we encounter.
Many of my students are below grade level learners. Their lack in basic skills makes math overwhelming at times. Many of the students get frustrated to the point of losing focus and not giving 100% on their assignments. This is a major concern for me because I realize that math is a life-long skill that will be required outside of the classroom. I believe that the solution to this problem is to emphasize the importance of mathematics. I would like to make math meaningful by providing my students with learning games that demonstrate how math is used in the real world. I will help them discover that they use math when they buy candy, rearrange the furniture in their bedroom, follow a recipe, and plan a birthday party. In order for math to come alive in my classroom, we need real-world math Fast Food activities. We need 1 Fast Food Foam Burger set and 1 Fast Food Decimal Dog set.
By funding our project, you will make math real and relevant for my fifth grade students.
You will help them see that math will follow them wherever they go! Children are never too young to start preparing for the future.
