When There Is No Wind, Row!: Reading Examples of Perseverance
My students need copies of the book, "Carry On, Mr. Bowditch".
This project expired on May 17, 2018.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
My classroom and my fellow teachers' classrooms are full of energetic sixth-graders. They are learning to be responsible for their own education. We are working to give them the skills they need to be successful in life.
My students are from an area that is economically challenged and are working against a culture that, at times, doesn't value education.
These students want to be successful and strive to follow the good examples of those who have become successful. They want to be inspired by multiple examples of success and how to achieve it for themselves.
My students are the same age that the boy in this true story was when the story about his life opens. A story of a young boy's life that has taken an unexpected detour as an indentured servant.
Students who read non-fiction accounts of others who have persevered through difficult circumstances are better able to see themselves as able protagonists of their own life's story.
Stories bring to life lessons worth passing on, such as: overcoming obstacles through hard work, the value in life-long learning, finding mutually-beneficial arrangements in interpersonal relationships, and finding joy in a world that can be cruel.
